The biggest night in fashion is officially back after a highly anticipated wait. The iconic Met Gala, embodying the passion and creativity of the fashion industry, allowed us to experience the best and boldest looks since it was last held in 2019. This year’s Met theme, “America: A Lexicon in Fashion”, paid tribute to American style through the ages. And let us just say, the night had its share of dazzling star studded looks.

One of the most apparent themes of the night was that of the classic glitz and glamour of Old Hollywood. One of the most iconic eras of fashion in American history inspired many of the celebrity looks, from eras to icons, these are some of the night’s best.

Starting off with the youngest Co-Chair in the history of the Met Gala, Billie Eilish, who stunned as soon as she set foot on the carpet. Billie embodied one of the most iconic women in American history, Marilyn Monroe, in a peach tulle corseted ball gown by Oscar de la Renta, complete with a 15 foot train. As Cher herself would say, “can I hear a little commotion for the dress?”. When asked about her look, Billie commented that “it was just time”, allowing herself to stay true to herself while embracing her femininity. Eilish completed the look with her newly blonde hair curled and styled in a bob, paired with her rose lips and lined eyes, she made a perfect modern day Monroe.

Other celebrities also embodied icons of Old Hollywood, such as Emily Blunt’s look inspired by the classic film Ziegfeld Girl, starring Hedy Lamarr in 1941. Blunt wore the subtle, but no less stunning, iconic look from the film. The Miu Miu jeweled dress, complete with a flowing cape and dazzling star headdress, truly was Old Hollywood personified.Another top look of the night also took the same route, with Kendall Jenner’s Givenchy sheer sparkling look taking a modern twist on Aubrey Hepburn’s iconic Givenchy gown in My Fair Lady. The supermodel paid homage to the classic actress in the best way, and is without a doubt one of the night’s top looks.

Another iconic Old Hollywood inspired look was Yara Shahidi who channeled Jospehine Baker, an iconic American-born French entertainer and civil rights activist of her time. Shahidi truly embodied Baker’s dazzling style in a beaded tan Dior gown, complete with a train, gloves, diamond accessories and a trained sheer veil. The actress looked simply divine as if she walked out of a retro film herself. Another popular actress, Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira, absolutely killed it at her first Met. Ferreira wore a Jonathan Simkhai gown encrusted with pearls. The stunning silhouette and delicate pearl draping was completed in impeccable detail. The look channeled the stunning costumes of Burlesque in the 1930s and 40s, with a perfect sultry violet eye look to match.

The night was filled with hits and misses on the carpet, but one thing is for sure: these celebrities delivered classic American glamour and embodied the dazzling world of Hollywood in its prime. These iconic looks embody the iconic fashion of the era while combining timeless looks with a modern twist, leaving us stunned and swept away in the world of the classic icons. One thing is for sure: we will be dreaming about these looks until Part Two of this year’s Met Gala, and yes, we are already counting down the days to the first Monday in May.
